Description
Artisan Well is a Kolkata-based non-profit organization established in 2005 and registered under the West Bengal Society Registration Act, 1961. The organization works with marginalized artisan communities to promote Indian handicrafts, preserve traditional craftsmanship and create sustainable livelihood opportunities through fair trade.
Registered with the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and Fair Trade Forum India, Artisan Well aims to connect artisan producers with domestic and international buyers through transparent and ethical trading relationships. It works with approximately 25 artisan groups representing around 100 artisans, supporting their creative skills, production capabilities and access to wider markets.
The organization specializes in leather handicrafts and handmade accessories, including wallets, purses, coin holders, key holders, ladies' bags, satchels, totes and rucksacks. Its product range also includes decorative and utility items made from stone, bull horn and wood, along with Dokra art, traditional musical instruments and handicrafts produced by tribal artisans of West Bengal.
Artisan Well offers a diverse collection of handcrafted products, including silk, viscose and chiffon scarves, stoles and beachwear. Other products include ceramic utility items, brass puzzles and handicrafts made from bamboo, grass and water hyacinth. These products reflect the creativity, cultural heritage and traditional skills of Indian artisan communities.
Beyond product development and supply, Artisan Well focuses on capacity building, improving production efficiency and supporting market-oriented designs. Its fair trade approach emphasizes fair prices, ethical working conditions, transparency, gender equality, environmental responsibility and the prevention of child and forced labour.
Through its producer partnerships and handicraft collection, Artisan Well helps buyers, retailers, wholesalers and fair trade businesses source distinctive Indian handmade products while supporting artisans' economic independence and long-term livelihoods.
